DIY Flower Arranging Tips from a Florist
There’s something so special about bringing fresh flowers into your home they instantly brighten a space, lift your mood, and add a touch of beauty to everyday life. If you love being able to DIY your blooms at home, here are a few simple tricks to make the most of your blooms.
1. Choose the Right Vase
The vase sets the stage for your flowers. For a small bunch, go for a vase that’s shorter and narrower rather than tall and wide this will give your blooms support and keep them looking full.
2. Prep Your Flowers
Before you start arranging:
-
Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line (to keep the water fresh).
-
Give each stem a fresh cut on an angle this helps them drink more water.
-
Let them hydrate for an hour or so before arranging.
3. Start with Greenery
Begin by placing some stems of greenery or foliage in the vase. This creates a base that will support the flowers and give your arrangement a natural shape.
4. Add Your Feature Flowers
Next, place your “hero” flowers, the ones you really want to stand out (roses, lilies, tulips, or whatever you’ve chosen). Keep them at slightly different heights so your arrangement looks more natural.
5. Fill the Gaps
Now add your smaller blooms or filler flowers (like baby’s breath, spray roses, or daisies). These soften the look and make the vase feel full without overwhelming it.
6. Check the Balance
Step back and look at your vase from all sides. Rotate it to make sure it looks balanced from every angle. A good trick: imagine your flowers forming a dome shape, rounded but not perfectly symmetrical.
7. Freshen It Up
Clean your vase and change the water every couple of days, trim the stems, and your arrangement will last much longer.
